Ho (V/R), Jan. 24, GNA – Torgbui Komla Sakpiti V, the Chief of Bakpa Awadiwoekome in the Central Tongu District of the Volta Region, has called on the President to urgently fulfill his promise of compensating the victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage.

In an interaction with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) during the vetting of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in Ho on Thursday,Torgbui Sakpiti stressed that immediate action would provide much-needed relief to those affected by the disaster, which occurred two years ago.

“We have been waiting since the flood for the previous administration to address this issue, but they failed to deliver. Now, we are hopeful that the new government will prioritize us, fulfill the promises made, and bring relief to our people,” he said.

Torgbui Sakpiti expressed optimism that the incoming District Chief Executive (DCE) and Regional Minister, being familiar with the challenges faced by the affected communities, would work closely with the government to facilitate the compensation process.

“The new DCE and our Members of Parliament know the struggles we went through during the flood and the difficulties we are still facing. We trust that they will act swiftly to ensure that Central Tongu receives the support we deserve,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Central Tongu, Mr Alexander Gabby Hotordze, assured GNA that plans were already advanced to ensure the President’s promise is fulfilled.

“Last year, we the three Tongu Members of Parliament (MPs) raised this issue on the floor of Parliament, and the Speaker formed an ad hoc committee to gather information from the affected areas. Chiefs and opinion leaders in Bakpa and Mafi were also consulted, and their concerns were documented,” Mr Hotordze explained.

He added that the matter had been brought to the attention of key figures, including the National Chairman of the party Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia.

“We are confident that once the government is fully formed, this issue will be addressed, and the affected people will receive the compensation they deserve,” he said.

Torgbui Sakpiti reiterated his belief that swift action from the government would help restore dignity and hope to the flood victims, bringing much-needed comfort to the affected communities.
