Jakarta, Oct. 31, (dpa/GNA) – Seven people were killed and 11 others injured on Wednesday when a bridge collapsed in Indonesia’s eastern Maluku province, police said.
Andi Munaswir, a candidate for Central Maluku district chief in a November 27 election, was crossing the bridge on Hatta Island with his campaign team when it suddenly gave way, plunging the entourage into the waters below, said local police spokesman Antony Kolauw.
Munaswir suffered minor injuries, Kolauw said.
The accident comes just weeks after a speedboat explosion on October 12 in North Maluku province, which killed six people including a candidate for provincial governor, Benny Laos.
The speedboat, which was ferrying Laos and his team to a campaign event, was docked and refuelling at a harbour when it exploded, engulfing the vessel in flames.
