Botswana’s ruling party confirms Mokgweetsi Masisi as 2024 presidential candidate

GABORONE, Sept 1, (Xinhua/GNA) — Botswana’s ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), on Saturday confirmed that President Mokgweetsi Masisi, will be its presidential candidate in the general elections scheduled for October.

Masisi was nominated during the party’s 40th National Congress in Gaborone, the country’s capital. “I am once more deeply honored by your unwavering support and graciously accept the nomination for the presidency of the illustrious BDP,” said Masisi in his speech, adding that he is energized and supercharged to catalyze the achievement of the economic aspirations of the country.

Despite the unprecedented challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the BDP-led government implemented its manifesto with resilience and determination, said Slumber Tsogwane, chairperson of the party, and vice president of the country. The brilliant leadership of the BDP saved lives, protected jobs, and created an environment conducive to post-COVID-19 recovery using various plans and ideas, said Tsogwane.

Botswana’s constitution limits the president to two five-year terms.

The southern African country has been governed by the BDP since independence on Sept. 30, 1966.
