Software bug forces Mercedes to recall more than 200,000 cars in US

Washington, May 27, (dpa/GNA) – German luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz, is recalling almost 235,000 passenger cars in the US to fix a problem with the car’s software.

According to the company, the problem affects specific vehicles across several classes and generations of cars, among them the CLA, GLA, GLE, GLS cars from 2017 to 2022.

On top of those cars, there are almost 20,000 vans and smaller transporters such as the Sprinter from the model years 2019 to 2021 in need of a software fix, according to documents published on Friday by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The problem stems from a bug in the SIM card software of the vehicles’ communication module, which could cause problems with mobile network access and thus disable the emergency call system, according to the documents.

The problem is to be solved with a software update installed via mobile connection, or at a dealership.

The glitch comes, just weeks after Mercedes had recalled around 292,000 older vehicles to workshops in the US in mid-May, because of potential brake problems.
