Gefia (VR), Feb. 16, GNA- Leadership of the Gefia Central Development Committee at Gefia, a community within Akatsi South has donated 50 wooden-type Mono desks to the Gefia Roman Catholic Basic School at Gefia in the Volta Region.
The gesture follows a response to a request by the school’s administration for the provision of additional desks after the Committee demanded from the school administration which challenges needed urgent attention.
At a brief presentation ceremony at the school premises, Reverend Vincent Adzika, Chairman of the Committee, explained that the move would greatly influence and improve teaching and learning in the school.
He revealed the donation was made possible from proceeds from their 61st Gefia Denyigbanyaza Festival Celebration as well as support from some individuals from the community.
He further said the amount generated from the celebration was Ghc 7000 whilst the Committee spent Ghc 12,000 on the desks.
Reverend Adzika, who is also the Akatsi South Municipal Municipal Director of the National Commission for Civic Education, said the school initially requested for 100 mono desks but provided 50 in the interim.
On academic performance, he said the school in the past has produced a good number of best grades at the Basic Education Certificate Examination level, “but the situation is not the same today.”
He attributed the shortfall to lack of proper supervision and further asked for collaboration from all stakeholders in championing the fortunes of the school.
He emphasised the need for an efficient Community -School Relationship, which was an integral part of the school administration.
He commended Torgbui Korbadzi III, the ‘Dufia’ of Gefia, and some benevolent individuals and groups for the show of love in developing the community.
He also revealed that other projects such as an ICT Lab which was started by the school administration ought to be given a helping hand in making it a reality.
Mr Simon Kwaku Bloko, Headteacher of the school, on behalf of management, expressed appreciation to the Committee and all who contributed to the success of the donation.
He promised to ensure the proper usage of the desks.
The Gefia RC basic school has a current total student population of 287 pupils from KG to the JHS level.
Chiefs and queen mothers, Municipal assembly staff, Elders, Education staff, some Heads of Department, parents as well as Mr Jerry Etse Agbo, the Assembly member for the area, witnessed the ceremony.
