Takoradi, Jan. 06, GNA-More than 80 contracts have been awarded to contractors for the construction of more than 1, 350 roads in the western Region, Mr. Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, Western Regional Minister has said.
The Regional Minister who was speaking to the media about roads and infrastructure development in the Region, stressed that complaints of poor roads network would soon be a thing of the past should all the roads awarded on contract be completed.
He mentioned some of the notable roads to include; the Agona-Afranse Wassa-Akropong roads, Bawdie-Asikuma-Dawurampong-Denkyira and Nkwanta- Mumuni junction.
The rest are Prestea Junction to Mumuni to Samaboi, which the Minster indicated was about 64 percent complete, Bogoso-Prestea, Agona Nkwanta-Dixcove enclave roads and the Funko-New Amanful road.
The Regional Minister also spoke about the Syno-hydro project town roads ongoing in Prestea as well as the asphalting of Prestea-Hemang roads.
He said contractors had returned to site and work was progressing on roads that were abandoned and entreated contractors working on them to speed up work to ensure that they were completed on schedule.
“Within the last two weeks, the government has been paying contractors and will continue for the next one month so contractors who complain they do not have money because the government have not paid them will not have any excuse”, the Minister said.
Mr. Darko-Mensah mentioned that work would soon begin on the dualization of the Takoradi to Sekondi road in the Month of January and stated that plans were underway to dualize the Agona Nkwanta-Takoradi road as well.
He also mentioned road construction work ongoing in the Tarkwa enclave.
He said the NPP government had done well in improving on the roads network in the Region and assured the people of the Region to exercise restraints.
“If the contactors should be working hard, I believe in the short time, nobody will be complaining about poor roads in the Western Region”, he said.
He cautioned that he would not hesitate to terminate the contract of non-performing contractors.
Mr Darko-Mensah added that efforts were underway to secure funds to construct and rehabilitate roads leading to tourist sites in the Region.
