Choir performs in safety gear at Notre Dame Christmas concert

Paris, Dec. 25, (dpa/GNA) – Singers from the Notre Dame choir performed in helmets and worker’s gear for a Christmas Eve concert in the heavily damaged cathedral on Thursday.
Television channel France 2 broadcast the performance.

For the 20 singers from the adult choir of Notre Dame, it was the first appearance at the church since it was badly damaged in a fire in April 2019.

Two soloists and an organist also took part.

The cathedral is still closed to the public, and the choir performed without a live audience.

There have been small masses without public attendance since the fire – for example at Easter.

Christmas masses have taken place in the French capital in other places, including in a circus tent, according to broadcaster BFMTV.

The traditional Christmas midnight Mass took place last year in a large marquee in the Bois de Boulogne park in the west of the French capital.

French President Emmanuel Macron has promised to rebuild the world-famous attraction by 2024.
