General Construction, Manufacturing and Quarries Workers Union salutes workers

Accra, April 30, GNA – The General Construction, Manufacturing and Quarries Workers Union of TUC Ghana salutes gallant workers for their sacrifice and dedication to duty.

Mrs Comfort Agambaa, the General Secretary of the Union, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said the sacrifice of Ghanaian workers was worth eulogizing.

“As we celebrate the International Day of Workers, we want to salute all Ghanaian workers for their continuous dedication and hard work,” she added.

She said April 28 every, was set aside as International Workers Memorial Day (IWMD), to remember the dead and the living in the struggle for the Trade Union rights, social economic and social rights world-wide.

“The Union wishes to use this special day to mourn with workers who suffered at the workplace through injury, deformation through brutal accidents even to the extent of losing their lives.”

She, therefore, urged workers to be cautious of their health and safety and above all preventive measures to minimize workplace accidents.

Speaking on the COVID-19 Pandemic, Mrs Agambaa said the virus was real and urged all workers to observe the health safety protocols to protect themselves from contracting the virus.
“The Union is advising workers to frequently wash their hands, use hand sanitizers, wear face masks and observe social distancing and other health and safety protocols at the site.”
However, the Union is notifying employers not to use this pandemic period as an advantage or opportunity to embark on unfair terminations and redundancies of workers in the sector, she added.

The Union therefore extends its profound gratitude to all workers and urged workers to stand together in this difficult times, she said.

Meanwhile, this year’s International May Day Parades was cancelled in compliance with the restriction on public due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Organised Labour in collaboration with the GBC will celebrate the day with a life Television programme on GBC to enable the leadership of Organised Labour reach out to all workers.
The programme will be aired on GTV at 0900 hours and 1300 hours.

The Ghana theme for this year’s celebration is “COVID-19 in Ghana: Impact on Employment and Working Conditions”.
