Greater Accra REGSEC introduces tough measures on coronavirus prevention

Accra, April 23, GNA – The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has introduced far-reaching measures to curb the spread of Covid-19 in Ghana’s epicenter.

The region recorded more than 900 cases of the coronavirus out of the national tally of 1154 reported Wednesday.

At its emergency meeting held on Wednesday, REGSEC members agreed to enforce the implementation of a number of actions to ensure that the public complied with President Akufo-Addo’s directives on social distancing and wearing of face masks.

A statement issued by Office of the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council and signed by the regional minister Ismael Ashitey, who is also head of the REGSEC, said the Council agreed on “mandatory wearing of face masks” by the public in the region.

The statement said it was agreed that Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) should carry out public education and sensitisation on wearing of face masks, social and physical distancing in their jurisdictions.

In furtherance of this action, the MMDAs were to install and use public address systems in markets to school traders on the mandatory face mask wearing, social and physical distancing and other directives.

The MMDAs were also expected to create satellite markets to decongest their main markets and impose temporary ban on all “special market days”.

“Commercial drivers are to ensure all passengers wear face maskers before being allowed to board their vehicles,” the statement said.

“Notices of “No face mask, No entry,” should be visibly displayed at vantage points like offices, lorry stations, shops, markets, mails, banks, and pharmacies, among others, it added.

The enforcement of the directives takes immediate effect, the statement said.
