Kumasi, April 15, GNA – The Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research into Tropical Medicine (KCCR) is investigating 13,199 blood samples collected by the Ghana Health Service as part of enhanced surveillance efforts in the fight against COVID-19 in Ashanti Region.

Dr. Emmanuel Tinkorang, the Regional Director of Ghana Health Service who announced this, said 10,853 of the samples were collected through community screening.

He said 1,233 were travelers on manifest, 488 routine surveillance and 625 being contacts of confirmed cases.

The Regional Director who was briefing the media on the regional update of the coronavirus said confirmed cases in the region stood at 53, with three deaths.
“Three people have recovered and eight are currently on admission and doing well,” he told the media.

The rest of the cases, according to him, were mild and being cared for in their homes, adding that, 340 out of 722 on contact-tracing list had completed their 14 days follow up.

He disclosed that the last four cases were reported on Monday and that 57 per cent of the cases in the region were males, with the remaining 43 being females.

Dr. Tinkorang commended the media in the region for the strong partnership with the directorate in the fight against the virus and stressed the need to sustain it for the benefit of the people.

He entreated the general public to disregard messages circulating on social media that the region had recorded 139 confirmed cases.

He described such practices as inimical to efforts being made by all stakeholders to contain the respiratory disease and admonished perpetrators to consider the larger interest of society before posting such messages.
