GAA inaugurates LOC for the CAA Region II Athletics Championship

Accra, May.10, GNA- The Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) has inaugurated a seven-member Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the organization of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Region Two Under-18 and 20 athletics Championship. 

The championship, which serves as qualification to the U-20 World Athletics to be staged in Colombia this year would see about 15 African countries battling for honours at the event.

The committee members are Mr. Mohammed Adjei Sowah, who is the Chairman, Madam Afia Serebour, the Secretary for the Committee whilst Mr. Jeffery Owusu, Mr. Julius B. Apidogo, Mr. Samuel T. Ayer, Dr. Marc Dzradosi and Mr. Bawah Fuseini would serve as members. 

Speaking at the inauguration on Tuesday, Mr. Seth Panwum, the Board Chairman of the National Sports Authority (NSA) said the organisation of the championship showed that the Government of Ghana was committed in developing Sports in Ghana.

According to him, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, in collaboration with the NSA would put measures in place to ensure Ghana hosted the event successfully at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium. 

“I would commend the GAA for organising this international championship to give our young athletes some international exposure,” he said. 

He congratulated the committee members for accepting to take up the task to help organise the competition, which he described as a “national duty”. 

Dr. Ofosu Asare, the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee for the 2023 African Games to be hosted in Ghana, said his team sees the competition as a pre-event towards the continental games. 

He also commended the Chief Executive Officer of the GAA, Mr. Bawa Fuseini for the initiative which would help develop and also select athletes to represent Ghana at the international front.  

The Chairman of the seven-member committee, Mr. Adjei Sowah expressed appreciation to the Minister of Youth and Sports, the NSA and the GAA for the confidence reposed in them to organize the championship. 

“One behalf of myself, we would like to thank you for the confidence reposed in us, this is a duty call for a national assignment, as much as the time is short, you took note of that and selected very experienced people to steer the affairs of the competition,” he said.
