Accra, Nov. 6, GNA – The Veterans Administration, Ghana (VAG), will on Wednesday, November 11, hold its annual Remembrance Day religious service at the Osu War Cemetery in Accra to honour men and women who died in the service of their country.
The service, to be held under the auspices of President John Dramani Mahama, is expected to bring together traditional rulers, heads of security services, members of the diplomatic corps, government officials, veterans, schoolchildren, and families of fallen heroes among other invited guests.
A press release issued in Accra, signed by Mr Segbefia Bright, the Executive Director of VAG, said the observance would provide an opportunity for the nation to reflect on the sacrifices of fallen heroes and renew its commitment to peace, unity, freedom and international cooperation.
It said the annual event was dedicated particularly to honouring those who lost their lives during the two World Wars and other military engagements in the cause of peace and security.
The Administration said the service would also recognise the contributions of veterans to national development and promote public appreciation of their courage, patriotism and selflessness.
As part of efforts to deepen public understanding of the significance of Remembrance Day, the VAG said it had requested airtime on the morning programmes of selected Accra-based television stations on Monday, November 9, to educate the public on the observance.
It urged the media and the public to support the event and join in paying tribute to the nation’s fallen heroes.
Remembrance Day, observed annually on November 11, commemorates members of the armed forces who died in military conflicts, particularly the two World Wars.
The date marks the signing of the armistice that brought fighting in the First World War to an end on November 11, 1918.
