Accra, Nov. 6, GNA – Parliament on Friday paid tribute to the late Samuel Arthur Odoi-Sykes, a former Minority Leader, diplomat and statesman, describing him as a distinguished public servant whose life and career helped shape Ghana’s democratic and political development.

The House observed a minute’s silence in his memory, while Members reflected on his contributions to education, diplomacy, parliamentary democracy and national service.

Delivering a tribute on behalf of the Minority Caucus in the House on Friday, Mr Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, said the passing of Mr Odoi-Sykes on October 5, 2026, had deprived Ghana of an elder statesman whose public service spanned several generations and key sectors of national life.

The tribute noted that Mr Odoi-Sykes served Ghana as a teacher, lawyer, diplomat, parliamentarian and political leader, carrying out each responsibility with a commitment to public service and national development.

“There is a particular solemnity in paying tribute to a former leader of this House. We occupy the institution he once served. We exercise freedoms he helped defend and inherit responsibilities he carried in circumstances very different from our own,” the Minority Leader stated.

The caucus described him as a member of a generation that witnessed both the promise of constitutional rule and periods of political interruption, saying his life underscored the importance of preserving democratic governance and the freedoms enjoyed by lawmakers today.

Born on February 25, 1929, in Jamestown, Nleshie in Ga Mashie, Old Accra, Mr Odoi-Sykes maintained strong ties with his Ga heritage throughout his life and remained respected for his dedication to public service and national unity.

Members said his long career demonstrated a commitment to duty, principled leadership and the strengthening of Ghana’s democratic institutions.

Parliament noted that his legacy would continue to inspire current and future generations of political leaders to uphold the values of integrity, patriotism and service to the nation.

Samuel Arthur Odoi-Sykes was a veteran Ghanaian politician, lawyer and diplomat who played significant roles in the country’s public life over several decades.

He served as a Member of Parliament and rose to become Minority Leader, contributing to parliamentary debates and democratic governance during a critical period of Ghana’s political history.

Beyond Parliament, he served Ghana in the diplomatic service and was widely regarded as an influential figure within the Danquah-Busia political tradition.

His public service career also included contributions to education and legal practice.

His life spanned major phases of Ghana’s political evolution, from the early years after independence through periods of constitutional and military rule, making him one of the notable statesmen whose experiences reflected the country’s democratic journey.

His passing marks the end of an era for many within Ghana’s political and parliamentary community.
