Accra, Nov. 4, GNA – The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has demanded the removal of four security agency heads over recurring cocaine seizures linked to Ghana.
The party wants the heads of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) and National Security to step aside to allow an independent investigation.
Addressing a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, Mr Henry Nana Boakye, Second Vice Chairman of the NPP, also called for the resignation of Mr Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the Minister of Interior.
The party said its research had identified at least 14 major cocaine and illicit drug seizures between March 2025 and October 2026, including seven in Ghana.
It said the seizures in Ghana involved about four tonnes of cocaine, while more than 12 tonnes linked to the country had been intercepted at ports in Amsterdam, Antwerp, Dunkirk and Beirut.
Mr Boakye said the incidents raised concerns about security at the country’s ports and airports.
“The reoccurring interception of cocaine and other narcotic substances originating from Ghana is a great threat to our national security and also a humongous international and reputational embarrassment,” he said.
The latest incident involved a Syrian national arrested at Rafik Hariri International Airport in Beirut, Lebanon, on October 31, 2026, after arriving from Accra.
Lebanese authorities reportedly found 46.7 kilogrammes of cocaine concealed in two suitcases, alongside an electronic tracking device.
NACOC said the consignment was allowed to leave Ghana as part of a controlled delivery operation involving Lebanese authorities. It later announced the arrest of persons in connection with the case.
Mr Boakye questioned the circumstances of the operation and the progress of investigations into previous seizures, including the interception of nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine by French authorities in September 2026.
He said an independent investigation would establish how the drugs passed through Ghana’s security systems and identify those responsible.
The NPP urged the government to strengthen efforts to combat drug trafficking and protect the country’s international reputation.
