Firecrackers thrown at Berlin Gen Z protest

Berlin, Oct 31.  (dpa/GNA) – Police said firecrackers had been thrown at a demonstration in central Berlin on Saturday.

Police urged demonstrators “to behave peacefully at all costs, not to use pyrotechnics and to distance themselves clearly and visibly from acts of violence.”

“The illegal setting-off of pyrotechnics has occurred and is still occurring sporadically,” the police said on the platform X.

Around 700 people gathered early in the evening at Rosenthaler Platz near the landmark Hackesche Höfe Art Nouveau courtyard complex in the city’s Mitte district.

From there, the demonstration titled “Gen Z has had enough!” – a variation on the Gen Z Takes Charge marches led elsewhere across Germany – marched towards the upmarket Prenzlauer Berg area.

“We note that one or other participant is prepared to commit crimes,” police spokesman Jörn Iffländer said. The police would respond to this consistently, he said.

Police said the organiser of the evening protest march was from the left-wing political spectrum, and participants from the pro-Palestinian scene were also present.

Police accompanied the demonstration with numerous officers.
