Essipong, Oct. 12, GNA – Mr Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey, Deputy Chief Executive Officer in charge of Marketing and Special Events at the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), has called for strategic investment and effective branding to unlock the Western Region’s tourism potential.

He said the Region’s coastal beaches, heritage sites, ecotourism attractions, including the Ankasa Forest, and quality accommodation facilities positioned it as a major tourism destination capable of attracting international visitors and investment.

Mr Aggrey, popularly known as Abeiku Santana, was speaking at the 2026 Western Regional Tourism Awards held at “The Grove,” Essipong Beach Resort, in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis.

He said the Region was experiencing growth in international maritime tourism, with more than 12 cruise vessels arriving in Takoradi in 2025 and bringing over 12,000 visitors.

He said the arrivals created economic opportunities for various local businesses, including transport operators, caterers, farmers and players in the creative industry.

Mr Aggrey said deliberate efforts were needed to package and market the Region’s tourism products to attract more visitors and stimulate local economic growth.

He also called for the repositioning of the Western Region as a destination for major conferences, saying it had the potential to compete with Accra in hosting important national and international events.

He urged tourism stakeholders to take ownership of the Region’s tourism narrative by effectively promoting its attractions, cultural identity and investment opportunities.

Mr Aggrey said the Black Star Experience, an initiative of the President, sought to position Ghana as a global destination for culture, heritage, entertainment and authentic African experiences.

The awards brought together tourism industry players to celebrate achievements and encouraged excellence in service delivery.

Mr. Henry Yeleduor, the Regional Director for GTA said the awards were intended to promote innovation, improve service quality and strengthen the capacity of local tourism operators to compete in international markets.

Mr Yeleduor urged tourism operators to continuously improve upon their facilities and services to meet industry standards and enhance visitors’ experiences.

In all a total of 29 individuals and institutions received awards.
