Water Ladies inaugurate urinal facility to improve sanitation at Bamang JHS

Bamang (Ash), Oct. 09, GNA – The Water Ladies Association, a group of female staff of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), has inaugurated a modern urinal facility to improve water, sanitation and hygiene at Bamang Junior High School in the Ejisu municipality of the Ashanti Region.

The facility was funded through the voluntary contributions and resources of the association’s members.

The intervention also includes the renovation of the school’s existing toilets and the construction of a dedicated borehole to provide uninterrupted water supply to the facility.

Lady Hannan A.A Mumin, the National President of the Association, speaking at a handing over ceremony, said the project was to help the girls get comfortable place to ease themselves when the need arose, especially in the period of menstruation.

She said the water project was approximately 80 percent complete, with key components, including the storage polytank and water pumps, already on-site and ready for installation.

She added that, although equipment availability caused a brief delay in drilling, work was set to resume immediately upon the arrival of the necessary machinery, with full completion targeted for the end of next month.

She urged the management of the school and the pupils to keep the facility clean to prolong its lifespan.

Mr Isaac Kwabena Asante, Headmaster of the School, said the situation used to be terrible because pupils, especially girls, found it difficult to respond to nature’s call.

“Every time they needed to urinate, it became a challenge due to dangerous animals in the nearby bushes.

They had to go deep into the bush to avoid being seen by their colleagues,” he said.

He said girls who soiled themselves had to walk all the way back home or borrow sweaters from friends to cover themselves.

“We are excited and most grateful to the Ghana Water Ladies for doing this project for us.

This is the first time we are having this urinal facility built for the school since its establishment in 1958,” he said.

He promised to maintain the facility to ensure it lasts for the next 40 years and beyond.

The Queen Mother of Bamang, Nana Werekua Boateng, described the project as an awesome intervention for the town.

She said it would provide a well-furnished place for students to ease themselves and help the girls keep themselves tidy and appealled to people within and outside the town to support similar projects.

She thanked the Water Ladies Association and urged residents to keep the facility clean at all times.
