Accra, Oct. 24, GNA – An unemployed man who attacked a mobile money vendor with a machete in an attempt to rob him of GH¢40,000 has been sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment.
Kwame Agyapong, alias Michael Osei, was sentenced by an Adenta Circuit Court to 10 years’ imprisonment for attempted robbery and two years for causing harm.
The sentences are to run concurrently.
The court, presided over by Mrs Angela Attachie, convicted Agyapong after a full trial, during which he had pleaded not guilty.
It also ordered that the time he had spent in custody be deducted from his sentence.
The court held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt through witness testimony and other evidence.
Chief Inspector Eric Abban, prosecuting, said the complainant, Christian Owusu, was a mobile money vendor residing at Adenta Accountancy, while Agyapong lived at Ashaley Botwe Highways.
He said that on June 5, 2025, at about 2030 hours, Owusu was returning home from work when Agyapong attacked him from behind with a machete near Adenta Accountancy.
Agyapong demanded the money Owusu was carrying, leading to a struggle during which he inflicted machete wounds on the complainant’s legs, head, hand and face.
The prosecution said Owusu managed to wrest the machete from Agyapong, who abandoned his bicycle and fled.
The incident was reported to the Police.
Investigations revealed that Agyapong had visited a bicycle repair shop and a barbering shop on the day of the incident, leaving the bicycle and machete at the premises.
On June 26, 2025, he was spotted at a barbering shop and fled upon seeing Owusu.
He was later spotted at Madina, arrested and handed over to the Police.
