Accra, Oct. 28, GNA – Mrs Yvonne Nana Afriyie, Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), says the entry of Uganda Airlines into Ghana’s aviation market will expand passenger travel options and strengthen connectivity between West and East Africa.
She said Ghana already received flights from East African countries, including Rwanda, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Kenya, and that the addition of Uganda Airlines would increase the number of carriers serving the market.
Uganda Airlines commenced scheduled commercial passenger flights to Accra, adding another carrier to the growing number of airlines operating between Ghana and other African countries.
The service was inaugurated at the Accra International Airport, where the Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) welcomed the airline and its delegation.
She said the new service could provide passengers with more travel options, improve connectivity, and encourage competition among airlines operating in the region.
The MD urged the Uganda Airlines to maintain high standards of safety, security, operational reliability and customer service in its operations.
She said GACL continued to invest in airport infrastructure, operational efficiency and service improvements to respond to the changing needs of passengers and other aviation stakeholders.
Mr Girma Wake, Chief Executive Officer of Uganda Airlines, thanked the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) for supporting the airline’s entry into the Ghanaian market.
He said the Authority had granted the airline traffic rights for operations between Accra and Lagos, although the carrier was not yet operating the route.
Mr Wake said the new service would strengthen air links between Ghana and Uganda and provide opportunities for passengers travelling between West and East Africa.
He said Uganda Airlines would initially operate four times a week, with plans to increase the frequency to daily flights and potentially twice daily, depending on demand.
He said passenger traffic between West and East Africa, as well as between West and Southern Africa, presented opportunities for airlines on the continent.
Mr Wake called for greater cooperation among African carriers to improve connectivity and enable passengers to travel to destinations beyond the cities directly served by individual airlines.
He said Uganda Airlines hoped to work with Ghanaian carriers and other airlines in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to strengthen connections between their networks.
He said collaboration among African airlines could help improve the movement of passengers across the continent and support the development of regional air transport.
