Rio de Janeiro, Oct 13. (dpa/GNA) – At least two people have been killed in Mexico, as severe weather linked to a hurricane and a tropical storm battered parts of the country, authorities said on Monday.
An elderly man died in the Pacific coast state of Guerrero, according to Governor Evelyn Salgado.
Further north, in Baja California, a girl died and 10 more people were missing, Governor Marina del Pilar said. The incidents are linked to Hurricane Simon, which is moving along the Mexican Pacific coast, and Tropical Storm Rachel, which has reached the north-western state of Baja California.
On Monday, Simon was a Category 2 hurricane, around 90 kilometres south-west of the Pacific coast of the state of Jalisco. Mexico’s national weather service forecast it would continue moving north-west while losing strength, and could approach the coastal city of Mazatlán in the state of Sinaloa, as a Category 1 hurricane overnight.
Authorities are therefore continuing to warn of heavy rain, strong winds and high waves along the Pacific coast.
The hurricane had still been classified as Category 4, the second-highest level, on Sunday morning.
President Claudia Sheinbaum had called on residents of several coastal regions to take precautions.
Tropical Storm Rachel made landfall in Baja California over the weekend. The rainfall accompanying the storm caused property damage, flooding and power outages in various communities on the peninsula, according to local media.
