Takoradi, Oct. 04, GNA – The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) has undertaken a waste evacuation exercise on some dumping sites to help ensure proper waste management practices and improve upon  sanitation in the metropolis.

The exercise formed part of the Assembly’s activities to observe this month’s National Sanitation Day in the area.

Madam Bertha Essel, the Head of Waste Management at the STMA, during the exercise said the Assembly’s focus on the National Sanitation Day was to clear and evacuate refuse on about 20 sites with full and overflowed containers which threatened environmental health within those areas.

She said: “We had a stakeholder discussion and we decided that the National Sanitation Day will be observed with evacuation at the container sites. We have 40 container sites in the whole of the metropolis and over 20 of them are full and overflowing because of logistical challenges.

“So, we are here to ensure that these sites are cleared so that subsequent clean-up exercises can be help successfully without any issues.”

Madam Essel noted that the exercise was part of broader measures by the Assembly to improve upon sanitation, ensure proper waste management, and promote good hygienic conditions for all.

Some residents who spoke to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) commended the Assembly for the intervention, and called on the city authorities to ensure regular lifting of skip containers to prevent refuse overflow on the sites.
