Accra, Oct. 29, GNA – Respect, effective leadership and a shared vision are essential to building successful sports teams, Mr Marshall Nortey, a Ghanaian sports professional, senior sports instructor and Rugby League coach at the University of Ghana, has said.
He said coaches must encourage athletes to respect one another and their teammates, stressing that discipline and mutual understanding were important in creating a strong team.
Mr Nortey made the remarks during a discussion following a screening of the “Remember the Titans” movie, which highlights leadership, racial tensions, teamwork and unity in sports.
Drawing lessons from the movie, he said bringing together players from different cultural backgrounds and countries could be challenging, requiring coaches to establish a clear vision and standards to guide the team.
He said coaches must also assign specific roles to players to ensure that everyone understood their responsibilities and worked towards a common goal.
Mr Nortey noted that when players understood the team’s objectives and their individual contributions, it became easier to build cooperation and achieve positive results.
He also highlighted the importance of influential players in a team, explaining that they could help coaches promote discipline, encourage their teammates and reinforce the values needed to achieve success.
According to him, leadership in sports should not be left to coaches alone, as players also had a responsibility to influence their teammates positively and contribute to the team’s overall development.
The film “Remember the Titans” served as a practical example of how differences among individuals could be overcome through mutual respect, discipline and commitment to a common purpose.
Mr Nortey urged coaches and sports participants to apply the lessons from the movie in their daily activities, noting that building a successful team required more than individual talent.
He said unity, respect and clearly defined responsibilities were necessary for players from diverse backgrounds to work together effectively and achieve their sporting ambitions.
