Accra, Oct 19, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama on Monday paid a courtesy call on former President John Agyekum Kufuor at his residence at Peduase, in the Eastern Region, to enquire about his well-being and discuss pertinent national and international issues.
The visit brought together the two statesmen who have both served as Presidents of Ghana – underscoring the value of engagement between leaders with experience in state governance and international relations.
President Mahama disclosed the visit in a social media post, saying he had called on the former President to check on him and discuss matters of national and international concern.
Although details of the discussions were not immediately available, the engagement provided an opportunity for the two leaders to exchange views on issues of interest to Ghana and the wider international community.
Mr Kufuor served as President from January 7, 2001 to January 6, 2009, leading the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration for two terms.
He was succeeded by President John Evans Atta Mills of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), with President Mahama as the Vice President, following the 2008 General Election.
The transition was significant in Ghana’s democratic development, demonstrating the country’s capacity to transfer political power peacefully between the two major political parties.
President Mahama, who first served as President from July January 2013 to January 2017, returned to office in January 2025 after winning the 2024 Presidential Election.
Ghana’s democratic experience has been shaped by successive elections and peaceful transfers of power, reinforcing the importance of constitutional governance, political tolerance and national stability.
