Pope Leo to undergo surgery for ‘localized nodule’ in his lung
Rome, Oct 11, (dpa/GNA) – Pope Leo XIV said on Sunday he would undergo surgery in the coming days to remove “a localized nodule” in his lung, that had been detected at “a very early stage.”
The nodule was discovered during recent medical examinations, he said, adding that “doctors believe surgery is appropriate.”
The head of the Catholic Church, who is 71, made the announcement during his Sunday prayers. His spokesman, Matteo Bruni, said the operation was scheduled for the “first days of this week” and the estimated recovery time would be “about one week.” No further details were released regarding Leo’s general state of health.
No health problems have been publicly discussed since Leo’s election last year as the successor to pope Francis. The pope is said to keep fit by playing tennis, swimming and exercising regularly.
Leo, whose real name is Robert Francis Prevost, is one of the younger popes in the history of the Catholic Church.
Next month, Leo is due to embark on a trip lasting almost two weeks to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru.
The former global head of the Augustinian Order, spent many years working as a missionary and bishop in Peru.
He also holds Peruvian citizenship.
