Accra, Oct. 24, GNA – Passion for Needy, a charitable organisation, has presented assorted items to the Department of Child Health of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital to support the care of premature babies.
The items are 100 plastic chairs, 20 blankets and 10 Veronica buckets, under the directive of Mrs. Evelyn T.B.Joshua, the wife of the late T.B.Joshua, the founder of the Synagogue Church of All Nations.
The donation followed a news report that highlighted the plight of premature babies at the hospital, which moved a member of the organisation to initiate support for the ward.
Mrs. Janet Torgbor El-Aschkar, the Chairperson, Passion for Needy, said the organisation initially considered donating blankets but decided to make further enquiries to identify other pressing needs of the ward.
She said the organisation subsequently learnt that the ward required chairs to accommodate parents visiting their babies, as well as Veronica buckets to promote handwashing and help prevent infections.
“We have been taught that when you are doing something, you should make sure you do the best, or you don’t do it at all. So, to bring just the blankets, we noticed that was not enough,” she said.
Mrs. El-Aschkar said the organisation was informed that the ward had 18 incubators and, taking into account the number of mothers who would visit their babies, it decided to provide 100 plastic chairs to improve their comfort.
She said the Veronica buckets were also included in the donation to encourage proper hand hygiene among parents and other visitors to reduce the risk of infections among the vulnerable babies.
The organization, she said, since 2010, had supported vulnerable people, including patients who could not afford their medical expenses.
She said the organisation initially paid the medical bills of needy patients but later adopted a more sustainable approach by registering vulnerable individuals and groups onto the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
She explained that the initiative was intended to ensure that people who fell ill but lacked the financial means to pay for healthcare could access medical services without undue financial hardship.
Mrs. El-Aschkar appealed to other philanthropists to come support the department to help improve healthcare delivery.
Rev Aimee Akotey, Director for Nursing and Midwifery Services, Korle-Bu Hospital, said the gesture demonstrated the NGO’s compassion and commitment to improving the care of patients.
“We are grateful for your partnership and pray for God’s blessings on your service to humanity,” she said.
Ms. Lawrencia Akweley Turkson, the Head of Engagement, Department of Child Health, Korle-bu Hospital, commended the organisation for the support and pledged to use them for its purposes.
