Ampain (W/R), Oct. 27, GNA – The Nzema Maanle Queenmothers Association has held its periodic strategic conference, to discuss issues bordering on the development of Nzema land.

The conference, held at Ampain in the Ellembelle Municipality, was attended by Queenmothers from the community, as well as Nzema-East and Jomoro municipalities.

It was on the theme: “The Role of Queenmothers in the Development of Nzema Maanle.”

Madam Judith Adjoba Blay, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana National Gas Company (GNGC) Limited, graced the occasion as Special Guest.

Addressing the conference, Awulae Hemaa Adakyie II, the Acting President of the Association, stressed the need for Queenmothers to be seen as agents of development.

She called on the Government to involve Queenmothers in decision-making, especially on issues affecting women.

Awulae Hemaa Adakyie, who is also the Paramount Queenmother of Lower Axim and Nsein Traditional Area, said the Association was undergoing re-organisation to tackle a wide range of issues affecting the Nzema area, including chieftaincy disputes, land issues, language preservation, prostitution and illegal mining (galamsey).

Mrs Blay in her address, indicated that issues concerning the welfare of women remained dear to her heart and must be at the centre of economic inclusion.

She said as a daughter raised by a Queenmother, she believed strongly in the role Queenmothers played in society.

“Queenmothers existed long before time and served as the fulcrum of development. Queenmothers settled family disputes, advised and protected the girl-child, preserved the indigenous culture, complemented efforts of Paramount Chiefs and ensured that children did not go wayward,” she said.

Mrs Blay said Ghana Gas, would partner the Association to clamp down on social evils such as teenage pregnancy, galamsey, prostitution, school drop-outs and drug abuse, to ensure girls remained in school to become responsible women and Queenmothers in future.
