Accra, Oct.30 GNA –The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced a GH¢5,000 fee for prospective parliamentary candidates, including sitting Members of Parliament (MPs), who declare their intention to contest the party’s primaries ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Under the arrangement, the party will open its online portal from November 1 to 10, 2026 for potential aspirants to declare their interest and pay the amount.
Mr Justin Kodua Frimpong, the General Secretary of the NPP, made the announcement at a press conference in Accra, saying the declaration of intent by candidates would be the first step in the process leading to the primaries.
He explained that the exercise was an initial administrative step before the formal opening of nominations, adding that prospective candidates are expected to register through the party’s online portal, PPC.nppghana.org, and pay a fee of GH¢5,000.
He said the party would verify prospective candidates against its constitutional requirements and the laws of Ghana to determine their eligibility.
“Our prospective parliamentary candidates will be checked on whether or not, per our constitution; they indeed qualify to stand as or to be nominated as a parliamentary candidate for our party. The party would also verify whether aspirants met the legal requirements for parliamentary candidacy,” he said.
Mr Kodua Frimpong also emphasized that declaring an intention to contest did not authorize aspirants to begin campaigning in their constituencies, adding that the party’s directive suspending campaign activities by prospective parliamentary aspirants, their agents and supporters remained in force.
“The party wants to reiterate that declaration of intent does not mean that a person has the right to go around and campaign in various constituencies. We have still not opened nominations,” he said.
Mr Kodua Frimpong described the declaration-of-intent process as a new initiative in Ghana’s political landscape, saying the NPP intended to lead the way in organising its internal electoral processes.
He said the party would also undertake a zoning exercise from November 1 to December 4, 2026, as part of preparations for the next phase of the process, with the northern zone expected to begin the exercise.
According to the timeline outlined by the General Secretary, training and capacity-building workshops will be held for the Northern Zone from December 1 to 4, the Middle Zone from December 8 to 11, and the Southern Zone from December 15 to 18.
The declaration process will precede the formal nomination and vetting stages of the NPP’s parliamentary primaries, which will determine the party’s candidates for the 2028 general elections. Both sitting MPs and prospective challengers are expected to undergo eligibility checks before the party advances to the subsequent stages.
