Accra, Oct. 24, GNA – Voting in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) constituency executive elections proceeded smoothly across several constituencies on Saturday as delegates elected local party executives.

The elections are being held in the party’s 276 constituencies, with about 15,000 aspirants contesting various executive positions as part of the NDC’s internal reorganisation process.

The Ghana News Agency observed voting and received reports from constituencies across the country indicating generally peaceful polling and steady voter turnout.

Delegates are electing constituency chairpersons, vice-chairpersons, secretaries, treasurers, organisers, women organisers, youth organisers and other executives to lead party activities at the local level.

In the Greater Accra Region, voting at the Kpone-Katamanso Constituency commenced at 0810 hours at the Kpone Methodist Park.

The exercise later continued at the Methodist School Park after discussions between Mr Emmanuel Ashie Moore, Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the NDC, and Electoral Commission officials resulted in additional time being granted for delegates who had not voted during the initial phase.

Police personnel were deployed to maintain order at the voting centre.

At the Essikado-Ketan Constituency, polling was progressing smoothly as of 1120 hours, while voting was underway at Ampain in the Ellembelle Constituency by 1240 hours.

Electoral officials and some delegates at Ampain described the exercise as peaceful, with a large turnout recorded at the centre.

In the Bolgatanga Central Constituency, voting began at about 1130 hours at the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) Hall following the election of youth and women organisers.

A total of 1,394 delegates were expected to vote at two polling centres for 55 aspirants seeking various executive positions. Mr Edward Apokera, a candidate for the treasurer position, was unopposed.

Voting was also ongoing at the Odorgonno Senior High School polling centre in the Anyaa-Sowutuom Constituency despite a delayed start.

Aspirants in the constituency were contesting 12 positions, including chairperson, vice-chairperson, secretary, deputy secretary, treasurer, deputy treasurer, organiser, deputy organiser and the Zongo Caucus representative position.

In Ablekuma North, 1,187 delegates out of an expected 2,600 had cast their ballots as of 1510 hours, while others remained in queues waiting to vote.

Mr Toddy Missinou, District Election Officer for Ablekuma North, said all delegates in the queue would be allowed to vote even if polling extended beyond the scheduled 1700 hours closing time.

The constituency elections form part of the NDC’s efforts to renew its leadership structures ahead of future political activities and organisational programmes.

The newly elected executives are expected to coordinate party organisation, mobilisation and administrative activities within their respective constituencies
