Obuasi (Ash), Oct. 02, GNA – The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has urged women in the Obuasi East Municipality to resist and report corrupt practices through the appropriate legal channels to promote accountability and good governance.

The Commission said women, as active members of their communities and various social and professional groups, had an important role to play in combating corruption and promoting the rule of law.

The call was made during an anti-corruption education engagement organised by the NCCE’s Obuasi East Directorate for women from various groups and associations.

The participants included members of the Hairdressers and Beauticians Association, Tailors and Dressmakers Association, market women, youth groups, and fun clubs, among others.

The engagement, sponsored by the European Union (EU), Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), sought to equip participants with knowledge on the rule of law, corruption, accountability and available mechanisms for reporting corrupt practices.

It also sought to reinforce key messages from a previous engagement and strengthen women’s confidence to identify, resist, report and prevent corruption in their homes, workplaces, and communities.

Mr. Daniel Agyei, a Resource Person from the Legal Aid Commission, drew participants’ attention to the Whistleblower Act and the Right to Information Act, explaining the protections and mechanisms available to citizens who sought to promote accountability and report wrongdoing.

He cautioned against allowing corruption to thrive, saying it could undermine the delivery of essential services and erode public confidence in institutions.

Mr. Agyei, therefore, encouraged the participants to resist corrupt practices and report on perpetrators using the appropriate legal frameworks.

Madam Jennifer Ofori, Municipal Director of the NCCE, also spoke on the importance of the rule of law to Ghana’s democratic system and urged participants to be law-abiding citizens and contribute to strengthening democratic governance.

She encouraged the women to promote integrity and accountability within their respective associations and communities and to demand accountability from persons entrusted with public responsibilities.

During the engagement, participants shared their experiences and reflected on how knowledge acquired during the first session had influenced their actions and decisions at home, workplaces, and within their communities.

They demonstrated increased awareness of the importance of the rule of law and expressed their commitment to promoting honesty, integrity, accountability, and responsible citizenship.
