Obuasi (Ash), Oct. GNA – The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has urged women to uphold the Rule of Law and play an active role in the fight against corruption in their communities.
The Commission said women, as important stakeholders in society, had a responsibility to speak against corrupt practices, promote integrity and accountability, and encourage ethical conduct in their homes, workplaces and communities.
The call was made during a follow-up civic engagement organised by the Obuasi Municipal Directorate of the NCCE for selected women’s groups at Obuasi.
The engagement formed part of the Commission’s project, dubbed: “Civic Engagements on the Rule of Law and the Fight Against Corruption,” which seeks to strengthen public awareness and sustained civic participation in anti-corruption efforts, the Rule of Law and accountability.
The follow-up engagement provided an opportunity for participants to reflect on lessons from the previous session and share their experiences in applying the knowledge acquired.
Discussions focused on practical ways of identifying and responding to corrupt practices, reporting mechanisms, promoting integrity and accountability, and overcoming challenges associated with speaking out against wrongdoing.
Participants were also encouraged to use the knowledge gained to influence positive behavioural change within their various women’s groups and communities.
Mr. Lawrence Nyame, Municipal Director of the NCCE, and Ms. Benedicta Arthur, an Investigator at the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), facilitated the engagement.
The concept of the follow-up engagement is to reinforce women’s knowledge and strengthen their capacity to resist corruption, promote accountability and encourage ethical practices within their communities.
It also seeks to deepen their understanding of legal protections and available reporting mechanisms.
The initiative recognises that sustained civic education is necessary to translate knowledge into action and encourages women to become peer educators and advocates for integrity, accountability and the Rule of Law.
The project is being implemented under the Participation, Accountability and Integrity for a Resilient Democracy (PAIReD) programme, commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and co-financed by the European Union (EU) and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), with implementation by GIZ in cooperation with the Ministry of Finance.
