NADMO urges residents to adopt disaster prevention measures

Koforidua, Oct. 15, GNA – The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Eastern Regional Secretariat, has urged residents to keep drains clean, avoid waterways and flood-prone areas, observe fire safety and heed weather alerts to reduce disaster risks.

The call forms part of activities marking the 2026 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDR), on the theme: “Resilience Starts at Home.”

In a press statement signed by Mr Emmanuel Konja Tullah, Deputy Eastern Regional Director of NADMO in charge of Technical and Disaster Risk Reduction, and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Koforidua, he said disaster prevention was a shared responsibility that began in homes and communities.

He said the theme reinforced NADMO’s motto, “Prevention Pays,” emphasising that proactive measures could save lives, protect property and minimise the devastating impact of disasters.

Mr Tullah urged households to develop emergency plans and promptly report potential hazards to the appropriate authorities.

He also called on Municipal and District Assemblies, traditional authorities, community leaders, the media and other stakeholders to intensify public education and promote responsible environmental practices.

“Disasters do not only destroy buildings. They disrupt livelihoods, undermine development and affect the social and economic wellbeing of communities.”

He said building resilience required collective responsibility and investment, adding that retooling NADMO to enable it to effectively fulfil its mandate of disaster mitigation and management was not a favour to the organisation but a social, economic and environmental responsibility to the people it served.

He reaffirmed the Eastern Regional Secretariat’s commitment to working with relevant stakeholders to strengthen disaster preparedness, early warning dissemination and community resilience across the region.

“Resilience Starts at Home. Prevention Pays. Let us make disaster prevention everyone’s responsibility,” he stressed.
