Israeli military: Hamas commander killed in Gaza

Stuttgart, Oct 5. (dpa/GNA) – Israeli forces have killed a Hamas commander in the Gaza Strip, who took part in the October 7, 2023 massacre in Israel, the military said, almost exactly three years after the attack.

The Hamas fighter was a commander of the Nukhba unit, that had infiltrated Israel on October 7, the Israeli military wrote in a post on the X platform on Monday.  The Nukhba unit is an elite commando unit within Hamas’ military wing and is believed to have led the attack in Israel.

About 1,200 people were killed, and 251 hostages were taken to the Gaza Strip during the unprecedented terrorist attack.

Israel responded with a military offensive in Gaza that killed tens of thousands, and caused severe destruction in the densely populated coastal strip.

The commander, who has now been killed in Gaza, was preparing attacks on Israeli civilians and soldiers and working to restore Hamas’s capabilities, the military said. This constituted a breach of the ceasefire, it added.

A ceasefire has technically been in place since October 2025, but the Israeli military continues to carry out airstrikes that it says are targeted at Hamas members.

Also on Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, threatened those involved in the massacre three years ago.  “There will be no Hamas rule in Gaza,” he said, according to a statement from his office. “Anyone who took part in the attack against us, anyone who held our hostages captive, is living on borrowed time,” he added.  “We will get them, just as we have got others. Day by day, we are settling the score with these despicable murderers.”
