Tamale, Oct 04, GNA – Gumani Football Club (FC) has won this year’s inter-community football gala after defeating Sakasaka FC 2-0 in the final of the tournament organised by MTN Ghana as part of activities marking its Savannah Fest.
Gumani FC put up a strong performance resisting attempts by Sakasaka FC to stage a comeback as it scored two goals to secure a convincing victory.
The finals attracted a large crowd, who cheered the two teams and created an exciting atmosphere as the communities came together to celebrate football and promote unity.
For emerging winners, Gumani FC received a trophy and GH¢20,000 cash with all its players also receiving a medal each.
Sakasaka FC, which placed second, received GH¢10,000 with all its players also receiving a medal each.
In the third-place match, Sabonjida FC defeated Shishegu FC 1-0 and received GH¢5,000 cash as its prize with all its players also receiving a medal each.
Best Goalkeeper, Goal King and Best Player of the tournament awards were also presented to individual players, who distinguished themselves during the competition.
All the matches were played at the NOBISCO Park in Tamale on Saturday afternoon.
The inter-community football gala, which commenced on September 18, brought together 16 teams from communities within Tamale, Sagnarigu and Tolon Assemblies.
The competition formed part of MTN Ghana’s 2026 Savannah Fest, an initiative aimed at engaging communities in the northern part of the country through sports and other social activities.
Abdul Latif Wakil, Coach of Gumani FC commended his players for their performance saying they adhered to the game plan and worked hard to secure the victory.
He appealed to MTN Ghana and other stakeholders to introduce football scouts at subsequent editions of the competition to identify talented players, who could be developed and potentially promoted to the national teams.
He said this would help to strengthen football in the country.
Mr Kwame Aseye, Retail Experience Manager, Northern Sector, MTN Ghana expressed satisfaction with the organisation and outcome of the competition.
He said the event had successfully brought communities together and created an avenue for people to interact, have fun and celebrate football.
He expressed hope that next year’s competition would be bigger and provide even greater opportunities for communities to participate.
