GTA sensitises taxi drivers on promoting Ghana’s tourism experience

By Hafsa Obeng

Accra, Oct. 5, GNA – The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has sensitised taxi drivers in Accra to serve as tourism ambassadors and help visitors discover the country’s attractions and cultural experiences.

The exercise targeted drivers at the Osu RE, Shoprite and Papaye Drivers’ Unions under the Authority’s “Know Ghana” campaign and domestic tourism marketing agenda.

Mr Kofi Atta Kakra Kusi, Deputy Director of Corporate Affairs of the GTA, said equipping taxi drivers with accurate information would enable them to better assist visitors and encourage patronage of local tourism attractions, products and services.

The campaign forms part of the GTA’s domestic tourism marketing agenda, including the “See Ghana, Eat Ghana, Wear Ghana and Feel Ghana”, “Experience Ghana” and “Black Star Experience” campaigns.

The drivers were encouraged to provide accurate information on attractions, heritage sites, local cuisine, clothing, music, nightlife and other cultural experiences, and to promote highlife music in their vehicles, particularly during the “December in GH” period.

Mr Kusi said the initiative formed part of broader efforts to increase tourist arrivals and receipts, stimulate investment and promote economic activity.

He called for similar sensitisation exercises to be organised at major taxi stations in Accra and across the 16 regions, as well as for other transport operators and unions, including the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Uber and Yango drivers.

Mr Kusi appealed to the media to give the initiative the needed publicity to reach a wider audience.

“Through the “See Ghana, Eat Ghana, Wear Ghana and Feel Ghana,” “Experience Ghana,” “Know Ghana” and “Black Star Experience” campaigns, the GTA continues to position Ghana as a destination where visitors can connect with its history, culture, cuisine, fashion, music, nightlife and people,” he said.

As part of the exercise, the GTA team distributed branded T-shirts, stickers and flyers to the drivers to support the “Know Ghana” campaign.

The team included Ms Francisca Boakye, Deputy Director of Corporate Affairs; Ms Judith Kelly, Principal Corporate Affairs Officer; and Mr Elvis Bruce Wallace, a tour guide from the Tour Guides Association of Ghana (TORGAG).
