Ho (V/R), Oct. 14, GNA – Mr Haruna Iddrisu, Minister of Education, has announced that government will begin the payment of outstanding promotion arrears to an initial group of 52,000 promoted teachers on Friday, October 16.
He said the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department would process the first phase of the payments on that date, while the remaining arrears would be reflected in the October salaries of the affected teachers.
Mr Iddrisu gave the assurance at the 64th Annual National Conference of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) in Ho.
He said by the end of October, the affected teachers would receive salaries based on their new grades following their promotions.
“Let me start with an assurance to GNAT, NAGRAT and all the people seated here that on Friday, October 16, I want to walk with my chest and neck high. Government will honour the first phase of payment of the outstanding promotion arrears for the first category of 52,000 promoted teachers,” he said.
The Minister also highlighted what he described as achievements in the education sector under the administration of President John Dramani Mahama, including the approval of a new Scheme of Service for education personnel.
He said the revised scheme would improve career progression and provide better retirement benefits for teachers and other education professionals.
Mr Iddrisu said the Ghana Education Service had reviewed its career structure, including progression from Director I to Director II, together with the associated benefits under the new arrangement.
On educational infrastructure, he said there were about 300 active Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) projects across the Volta and Oti regions, reflecting government’s commitment to improving educational facilities.
The Minister said government was responding to appeals by CHASS for the completion of stalled and uncompleted GETFund projects, while awarding new ones to address infrastructure deficits across the country.
He reiterated government’s commitment to expanding educational infrastructure, improving teaching and learning conditions, and addressing outstanding obligations to teachers.
Mr Iddrisu said government would continue to pursue reforms aimed at strengthening the education sector and enhancing the welfare of education workers.
