Government allocates GH¢200 million for Police Hospital expansion project — Mahama

By Iddi Yire, GNA

Accra, Oct. 13, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Government will allocate more than GH¢200 million in the 2027 Budget to complete the long-delayed Police Hospital Expansion Project.

He disclosed that Cabinet had taken a decision to terminate the 22-year-old contract following prolonged disagreements with the contractor and escalating project costs.

President Mahama said he had directed the Minister for Finance to make provision in the 2027 Budget for the funds required to complete the project.

“The contract has been going on for 22 years. We have finally brought it to an end. We’re going to complete it ourselves, and so the minister will provide about a little over GH¢200 million that is required to complete it and bring it into service before the end of next year.”

The President announced this in Accra on Tuesday when he commissioned a new 85-bed ward complex at the Police Hospital, named after the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno.

President Mahama said the completion of the expansion project would significantly enhance healthcare delivery at the facility.

According to him, the project would add 106 beds to the hospital, increasing its total bed capacity to more than 300.

He said the expanded facility would include a 12-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU), a new Accident and Emergency Centre, 11 consulting rooms, four paediatric consulting rooms, modern Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT) scan equipment, three general surgical theatres, an orthopaedic theatre, a specialised theatre and an endoscopy unit.

The President added that the project would also provide a 222-capacity mortuary to improve the hospital’s support services.

To strengthen emergency healthcare delivery and support operations at the newly commissioned ward complex, President Mahama donated two new ambulances to the Police Hospital.

He noted that for an injured police officer at a crime scene or a patient requiring urgent transfer, medical care must begin before arrival at the hospital.

The President said the ambulances would facilitate the safe transportation of patients and support timely referral and treatment.

He emphasised that their effective use must be complemented by trained personnel, appropriate life-support equipment and regular maintenance.

President Mahama described the commissioning of the new ward complex as a practical demonstration of Government’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery and ensuring the welfare of security personnel.

He congratulated the Ghana Police Service and all stakeholders who contributed to the successful completion of the facility.

“Let us preserve this investment and ensure it delivers reliable care for many years to come,” he said.

The President expressed the hope that the facility would bring healing, hope and renewed strength to all who would access healthcare services there.

Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the Minister for the Interior, said President Mahama’s enduring commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and enhancing the welfare of security personnel continued to leave a lasting impact on the nation.

He said the facility stood as a visible symbol of that commitment and the President’s determination to build a stronger and more inclusive Ghana.

Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Inspector General of Police, expressed profound appreciation to President Mahama for his continued support for the Ghana Police Service and concern for the welfare of its personnel.

He assured that the Police Administration would continue to pursue initiatives aimed at improving the health, welfare and operational effectiveness of officers.
