Google Cloud outage in London data centre disrupts banking services

London/Berlin, Oct 20, (dpa/GNA) – A major outage of Google Cloud services in Britain, also caused technical disruption in parts of western Europe, affecting banking customers and other online services, Google and affected users said on Tuesday.

Infrastructure in the London region was affected, with consequences for users beyond the UK’s borders. The disruption affected digital payments and account services at financial providers such as the British digital bank Revolut.

Services at the Dutch bank ING were also affected. However, a spokesman for ING said later this was not due to the disruption at Google: “All our services are once again fully available to our customers.”

The bank said it regretted the restrictions experienced by customers and apologized for the inconvenience caused.

Users in several European countries complained of temporary restrictions on app access and transactions.

Numerous other websites and business applications that rely on Google’s cloud infrastructure also experienced problems.

Google acknowledged the technical difficulties on its status pages and worked urgently to fix the fault. The full extent of the international damage and the cause of the outage in the London data centre zone are still being analysed, it said.
