Four killed in attacks on Saudi airport, oil field

Cairo, Oct 22. (dpa/GNA) – Two people were killed and eight others injured in an attack on the airport in the Saudi Arabian city of Dammam, the country’s aviation authority said on Thursday.

The attack on Wednesday evening also caused material damage, the extent of which was still being assessed, the authority said on X.

The airport in the Gulf coast city had already been targeted once this month by Yemen’s Houthi militia, with that attack also causing damage.

In a separate attack on Wednesday, two people were killed by debris from an intercepted drone, launched by the Iran-backed Houthis, Saudi state news agency SPA reported.

Two others were injured in the incident, it said. Saudi air defences shot down the drone, which had been targeting the Shaybah oil field, operated by state energy giant Aramco.

The Shiite Houthi militia has recently launched repeated drone, missile and cruise missile attacks against targets in neighbouring Sunni-majority Saudi Arabia. The attacks have killed and injured numerous people, including at the international airport in the capital Riyadh.

Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, is allied with Yemen’s internationally recognized government, and has been carrying out attacks against the Houthis. The kingdom and its allies have been fighting the rebels for more than a decade.

The civil war in Yemen, which is estimated to have killed hundreds of thousands of people through both direct violence and indirect consequences, has flared up again amid the war involving Iran.
