Accra, Oct. 20, GNA—Hajia Katumi Natogmah Attah, Greater Accra Regional Director of Education, has urged boys not to see the empowerment of girls as a competition.

She said it was a shared responsibility for building stronger schools, families and communities.

Hajia Attah said these in a speech read on her behalf at the commemoration of this year’s International Day of the Girl Child in Accra, organised by the Ghana Education Service in collaboration with the Church of Pentecost (CoP) Headquarters, Women’s Ministry and Schools Outreach Ministry.

The Day is marked globally on October 11 to address the unique challenges faced by girls and promote their empowerment and rights.

The International theme is: “End child marriage and invest in girls’ rights.” whiles the regional sub-theme, is:” Investing in the health, safety and empowerment of the Girl Child.”

The Regional Director said true strength was demonstrated through respect, self-discipline and responsible leadership, and not through bullying or discrimination.

“Remember, the success of a girl does not diminish the success of a boy. Rather, when girls and boys learn, grow and work together, they build stronger schools, families and communities,” she stated.

Hajia Attah called on the citizenry to become champions of respect, fairness and equal opportunity.

She encouraged boys to respect their female classmates, encourage their ambitions and reject every form of bullying, harassment and discrimination against them.

“When a girl speaks, listen; when she succeeds, celebrate her; and when her rights are threatened, stand up for what is right,” the Regional Director added.

Ms Abigail Tobbin, a Lawyer and guest speaker at the event advised girls to also respect boys, saying: “We must raise girls who respect men and boys who understand responsibility and girls who understand their worth.”

She noted that the girl child could not be raised in isolation from the boy child.

Citing Genesis 1:27, Ms Tobbin said God created male and female in His own image, both with purpose and value, to complement and not compete.
