Children’s Foundation screens 700 women for cancers in Zebilla

Zebilla (U/E), Oct. 08, GNA -Haven of Love Children’s Foundation (HOL), a non-government organisation, has screened about 700 women for cervical and breast cancer at Zebilla in the Bawku West District.

The exercise was in collaboration with the Women’s Ministry of the Upper East Region Zone ‘B’ of the Assemblies of God (AG) Church, Ghana.

The outreach formed part of HOL’s efforts to promote preventive healthcare, early detection and access to essential health services, particularly among women in underserved communities.

It was the Foundation’s third major cervical and breast cancer screening exercise with its partners, following similar outreaches in December 2025 and May 2026, which collectively screened over 1,500 women in the region.

The screening was conducted by a team of health professionals, including Madam Monica Lamisi Sadungu, a retired Public Health Nurse, Madam Matilda Adaboro and Madam Gladys Ayaaba, both Senior Midwives at Timonde Health Centre and Zebilla Hospital respectively, supported by Madam Freda Akampoi, Midwife at Zanlerigu Health Centre.

Madam Sadungu, who led the team, identified limited numbers of midwives with specialized training in cervical cancer screening as a major challenge in the Bawku West District.

She said only three midwives in the district had relevant training and were yet to complete all modules required for comprehensive examination and assessment of suspected cases.

She noted that the limited number often resulted in clients with suspected abnormalities being referred to higher-level health facilities for further assessment and management.

Madam Sadungu, therefore, called on the Regional and National Health authorities to support the training of more midwives and frontline health workers to expand screening and health education services at Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds, health centres and other primary healthcare facilities.

Mr Samuel Nana-Bekai Djirackor, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of HOL, commended the Women’s Ministry for the collaboration and their commitment to promoting women’s health.

He appealed to corporate organisations, benevolent individuals and other stakeholders to support the Foundation to reach more vulnerable people in deprived communities across the country.

He noted that expanding access to healthcare required collective efforts, with individuals and institutions contributing expertise, resources and time to address the needs of communities.

Mr Djirackor said the outreach underscored the need for sustained partnerships, increased training of health professionals and accessible screening services to ensure that women in underserved communities were not left behind.

Pastor Mrs Faustina A. Moore, the Regional Director of the Zone ‘B’ Women’s Ministry of the AG Church, Ghana, expressed appreciation to HOL for the partnership and pledged the ministry’s support for future health programmes.
