Mexico City, Oct 18. (dpa/GNA) – A Catholic priest in Ecuador was killed, when a large wooden cross fell on his head during Mass, according to a video of the tragedy.
The large wooden cross hung above the altar of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help church in the city of Guayaquil.
The video shows the cross falling directly onto the priest’s head during Mass on Saturday evening. The Mass was being broadcast live on the parish’s social media accounts, when the fatal incident happened.
Those present can be heard desperately calling out, “Father, Father! Call an ambulance!”
The archdiocese of Guayaquil, expressed its solidarity and sympathy with the priest’s relatives and the parish community.
A statement said the priest had gone to the house of the Father. It read, “Rest in peace.” It gave no specific details of the circumstances of the death.
It was initially unclear what caused the cross to fall.
