Jinijini, (Bono), Oct. 17, GNA – The Berekum West District Assembly in the Bono Region has presented working tools, equipment and cash to 57 Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) spread across the district.
Mr Collins Asomah, the Berekum West District Chief Executive, said the items were bought with the PwDs share of the second quarter disbursement of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF).
Speaking at a ceremony at Jinijini, he said the presentations were made with the support of the District Office of the Department of Social Welfare, adding that the gesture was part of the government’s effort to lessen the economic burdens of the PwDs.
He said 43 of the PwDs received cash of GH¢3,000 each with others receiving fufu pounding machines and deep freezers as well as educational and health support.
Mr Asomah urged the beneficiaries to utilize the cash and the machines for the intended purposes and to better their living conditions.
Mr Yaw Osei, the spokesperson for the PwDs in the district thanked the government for the support and pledged their commitment to use the items to improve their lives.
He called on the public to desist from discriminating against the PwDs, saying that doing so infringe on their fundamental human rights and dignity.
Mr Kwabena Kyereh Duah, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Berekum West Constituency, says plans were underway for the amendment of some Acts that barred PwDs from obtaining driver’s license.
He said with the amendment of those Acts the PwDs could also obtain driver’s licenses, noting PwDs could now drive some modern vehicles and pledged to secure a modern office for the PwDs in the district.
