Accra, Oct. 1, GNA – Mr Yaw Ampofo Ankrah has been relieved of his duties as Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), bringing his tenure at the helm of the country’s sports governing body to an end.
Mr Ankrah, who served as Director-General for more than a year, oversaw the administration of the authority and the implementation of sports development programmes across the country.
His departure comes at a time when Ghanaian sports, particularly football, have faced growing public scrutiny following a series of disappointing results, with many stakeholders calling for reforms and a renewed direction for the sector.
The development also follows President John Dramani Mahama’s dissolution of the NSA Governing Board on September 2, 2026.
Meanwhile, Professor Emmanuel Osei Sarpong is expected to be named Acting Director-General of the NSA following Mr Ankrah’s suspension.
Prof. Sarpong previously served on the authority’s governing board and chaired its Technical Committee before the board was dissolved in September.
An Associate Professor of Physical Education and Sports at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Prof. Sarpong also serves as Dean of Student Affairs at the university.
With extensive experience in sports administration, physical education and grassroots sports development, he is expected to bring significant expertise to the role as the authority begins a new chapter.
A new governing board is also expected to be constituted in due course, as efforts continue to strengthen the administration and development of sports in the country.
