Accra, Oct. 28, GNA – The Black Maidens of Ghana secured a place in the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after beating Argentina 5-4 on penalties.

The Black Maidens made a bright start and took the lead in the 16th minute through Cynthia Obinsrewuo, who finished calmly after a well-worked attacking move.

Ghana’s task became more difficult in the 77th minute when Hajara Adam was shown a red card, after a second bookable tackle.

Argentina capitalised on their numerical advantage and restored parity in the 86th minute through Mercedes Diz.

The South Americans pressed for a late winner and dominated possession in the remaining minutes, but the Ghana defence stood firm to deny Argentina and preserve the result.

Despite the late pressure, the Black Maidens showed resilience and determination to book their place in the last eight of the competition.

The quarterfinal qualification marks Ghana’s best performance at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup since reaching that stage in 2018.

The Black Maidens would now await the winner of the Round of 16 clash between Japan and Kenya for a place in the semifinals.
