New York, Sept 27. (dpa/GNA) – UN Security Council members, on Friday condemned escalating attacks on Saudi Arabia by the Iran-backed Houthi militia in Yemen.
Members of the Security Council condemned, “in the strongest terms,” continued Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia and the ongoing Houthi military escalation in Yemen.
The Houthi’s actions “risk further expanding the conflict, threatening maritime security and international trade, and undermining regional and international efforts to secure peace in Yemen,” a joint statement said.
The decade-old conflict in Yemen, which has pitted the Iran-backed Houthi rebels against the internationally recognized government supported by Saudi Arabia, has flared up again amid the Iran war.
In recent weeks, the Houthis have intensified their missile and drone attacks on neighbouring Saudi Arabia, and imposed a blockade on its vessels.
The Houthis earlier this month, seized the western coast of Yemen in a lightning offensive, gaining access to the strategically important Bab al-Mandab Strait.
