Accra, Sept.29, GNA -The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service has postponed the implementation of TRAFFITECH-GH Programme, an automated traffic law enforcement to November 1, 2026.
Initially the law was scheduled to take effect on October 1, 2026.
This is to give room for enough public sensitisation and education before the laws are enforced, a press release said in Accra, Tuesday evening.
TRAFFITECH-GH an automated digital system would use radar, high-tech cameras, sensors and Personal Data Assistant (PDA) devices to fish out drivers who flout traffic regulations.
Explaining how the technology would work, the MTTD said cameras would capture traffic offences, including driving through the red lights and speeding.
It stated that there would be personnel to review what the cameras capture, thereby verifying the footage to prevent false penalties.
After the verification if drivers or riders are found culpable, an Electronic Notice of Violation (ENV) would be sent to the vehicle owner through SMS with the fine details.
The alleged offenders can make payments through the Government of Ghana’s electronic payment platform (short code *222#) or other payment options.
They can also contest the offences in court if they disagree.
The MTTD said the Programme would help check recalcitrant drivers or riders, reduce road crashes, improve compliance with road traffic laws and address general road indiscipline across Ghana.
It is designed to complement the work of the MTTD personnel and not to replace manual traffic enforcement by police officers.
