New Winneba (C/R) Sept 01, GNA-Three people have been confirmed dead, a security officer injured and about 15 other people wounded following a communal clash involving residents from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze on the residents of New Winneba in the Effutu Municipality of the Central Region.
All the injured have been conveyed to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital at Winneba in the Effutu Municipality for treatment, but the names of deceased were not known, Chief Inspector Evans Ettie, Central Regional Police Public Relations Officer, disclosed in a statement.
The statement issued by the Central Command of the Ghana Police Service confirmed the tragedy but could not reveal the cause of the incident as investigations are ongoing.
The police said the incident occurred on Tuesday, September 1, at about 1040 hours when an irate mob, numbering about 300 persons armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks stormed New Winneba township and unleashed violence on residents.
The police said the attackers also targeted shops and private residences, assaulting inhabitants and causing damage to property.
Responding to the attack, officers from Winneba Divisional Headquarters and Agona Swedru District Patrols were deployed to the scene.
Subsequently, two armoured personnel carriers from the Police National Headquarters were also dispatched to reinforce security and restore order.
