Damascus, Sept 17. (dpa/GNA) – Three Syrian security personnel have been killed and others wounded, during an operation against members of the Islamic State terrorist group, state news agency SANA reported.
An armed group with links to Islamic State had been hiding in a town in the southern Daraa province, SANA reported. The security forces said the men refused to surrender and opened fire when they launched the operation.
Residents said prolonged clashes broke out early in the morning, with explosions also heard in the area. A temporary curfew was imposed on the town.
Daraa is considered the birthplace of protests against former ruler Bashar al-Assad, who was ousted in 2024.
The province witnessed repeated and sometimes heavy fighting during Syria’s civil war.
Islamic State once controlled large areas of Syria and neighbouring Iraq.
Although the group no longer carries out as many attacks in Syria as it did in previous years, the threat has not disappeared completely.
