Ada, Sept. 18, GNA – The Tema Regional Police Command, through the Marine Police Detachment at Ada, has intercepted an outboard-powered wooden canoe containing 29 sacks of dried leaf substances suspected to be Indian hemp on the River Volta at Tuanikopey Island.
The interception occurred at about 00:45 hours on Thursday, September 17, 2026, during a routine patrol by the Marine Police.
A statement from the command indicated that the occupants of the canoe abandoned the vessel and fled after sighting the patrol team.
A subsequent search of the canoe uncovered 29 sacks containing a total of 2,213 slabs of dried leaves wrapped in yellow cellotape.
The police also found 14 of 25-litre gallons in the canoe, 12 of which contained premixed fuel.
The canoe also contained two Yamaha outboard motors, one with 40 horsepower and the other with 30 horsepower.
The command stated that the suspected narcotic substances have since been conveyed to the Ada District Police Headquarters, while arrangements are underway to convey the outboard motors and premixed fuel to the station for further investigations.
The Tema Regional Police Command said it was making efforts to identify and apprehend the individuals who abandoned the canoe and its contents.
The Command cautioned the public against engaging in the trafficking and transportation of narcotic substances and also appealed to anyone with information about the owners or occupants of the abandoned canoe to report to the nearest police station to assist in the ongoing investigation.
