A release issued by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Dede Dzakpasu, Head of the Command’s Public Affairs Unit and copied the Ghana News Agency, said the interception took place on Thursday, September 17, at about 0045 hours, during a routine patrol.

“The Tema Regional Police Command, through the Marine Police Detachment at Ada, intercepted an outboard-powered wooden canoe containing twenty-nine (29) sacks of dried leaf substances suspected to be Indian Hemp on the River Volta at Tuanikopey Island,” it said.

“The occupants of the canoe, upon sighting the Police, abandoned the canoe and fled as a search revealed 29 sacks containing the 2,213 slabs of dried leaves wrapped in yellow cellotape.”

“Also found in the canoe were fourteen (14) 25-litre gallons, twelve (12) of which contained premixed fuel, and two (2) Yamaha outboard motors, one 40HP and the other 30HP”.

The release said the substances had been conveyed to the Ada District Police Headquarters whilst arrangements were underway to convey the outboard motors and pre-mixed fuel to the station for further investigation.

“The Command is making efforts to identify and apprehend the persons who abandoned the canoe and its contents,” it said.

It cautioned the public against engaging in the trafficking and transportation of narcotic substances and urged anyone with information on the owners or occupants of the canoe to report to the nearest Police station to assist in investigations.
